Landscape lighting design

Your garden, after the sun goes down

We design, wire and aim landscape lighting for homes in Scottsdale and the north Valley. Every job starts with a walk through your yard at dusk, when you can see what the light will do.

  • Insured, and permitted where required

The dusk walk

We start the design when the light is going

We come at dusk, once the sky has gone blue and the yard has gone quiet. You show us where you sit, where you walk and what you look at from the kitchen window. We carry test fixtures and set them on the ground, so you see what a light does before it is on a plan.

  • You and a designer, in your yard, at dusk

  • Test fixtures moved until it looks right

  • A written plan after, with every fixture and its place

What we light

Four places a yard wants light

  • Two small path lights among potted plants in a garden at dusk

    Paths and steps

Low, shielded lights that show you the ground and not the fixture.

  • A hooded landscape spotlight glowing in a garden at dusk

    Trees and walls

A light set low and aimed up turns a palo verde or a stucco wall into a shape you can see from inside.

  • A garden lantern glowing under a patio umbrella among dark shrubs at night

    Patios and pergolas

Lantern, string and wall lights over the places you eat and stay up.

  • A black porch lantern lit beside hanging flower baskets at dusk

    Entries and driveways

Wall lanterns and low lights that welcome people to the door without lighting the street.

From walk to first night

Five steps, and the last one happens in the dark

  • The dusk walk

A designer in your yard as the light goes, with test fixtures.

  • The written plan

Every fixture and where it goes, the wire and transformer, the controls, and what the price leaves out.

  • Permit and Arizona 811

We pull the permit where the work needs one, and call Arizona 811 before anyone digs.

  • The install

Shallow trenches, low-voltage cable, fixtures set and wired to a transformer and controls. Inspection where it is required.

  • The night aim

We come back after dark to aim and dim every light, walk the yard with you and clear the site.

How we price a lighting plan

  • What decides the price

The number of lights matters less than the ground and the wire. These are the things that move it.

    • How many fixtures, and how far apart

    • Caliche or rock under the topsoil, and any concrete or pavers to cross

    • How far the nearest outdoor power is from the first light

    • Controls: a dusk sensor, a timer, or zones on an app

    • The fixture's material and finish: brass, copper or powder-coated

  • What the estimate includes, and what it doesn't

The plan is written. It lists every fixture and where it goes, the cable and transformer, the controls and the labor.

    • Not in it: irrigation repairs, plants and masonry patching

    • Not in it: utility fees and any panel work the plan turns up

    • Permit fees are passed through at what the city charges

  • What happens at the visit

The dusk walk is a design visit with a fee, and the fee is credited to the installed price if you book within 60 days. The owner sets the amount and confirms the terms.

  • After hours

We do planned work only, so a call at night waits until morning. Night visits are booked ahead, after sunset, to aim and tune your lights, and they are priced as ordinary visits. If you smell burning or see sparks, turn off the breaker if it is safe and call 911 for a fire.

  • When you get the number

Before work starts, in writing, as one price for the plan. A change after that is agreed in writing before we do it.

Who you will meet

One designer from the first walk to the last aim

Jacinta Overton started as an electrician and moved into lighting because she wanted to see her work at night. She leads the dusk walks and writes every plan. Javier Tovar leads the crew that digs, wires and aims.

Heard after the first night

“Jacinta walked the yard at dusk with a bag of test fixtures and a notebook. By the time the sky was dark we had agreed on which two trees and which wall.”

Brent W.Paradise Valley

“They came back after dark to aim every light. One was washing the neighbors' wall, and they moved it before I had said anything.”

Erika B.North Scottsdale

“The plan listed every fixture, every run of wire and what wasn't included. The invoice matched it line for line.”

Questions before the first walk

What happens on the dusk walk?

A designer walks your yard with you as the light goes. We ask where you sit, where you walk and what you look at from inside. We set a few test fixtures on the ground and move them until it looks right. Then we write up a plan: every fixture, where it goes, the wire and the controls, and what is not in it.

Do I need a permit, and who pulls it?

Low-voltage lights often don't need one; a new circuit or a new outdoor outlet usually does. We pull the permit where the work needs it, and the plan says whether yours does. The owner confirms the rule for your city before you rely on this.

How do you keep the light off my neighbors' walls?

We use shielded fixtures, warm white lamps and narrow beams, and we come back after dark to aim each one and dim it. If a light is throwing past your fence, we move it on the night, not a week later.

Can you fix or add to a system someone else installed?

Often, yes. We test the transformer, the wire and the connections before we promise anything. If the cable is brittle or the splices have failed, we tell you and price the repair separately from any new lights.

What does it cost?

It depends on how many lights, how far apart they are, what the ground is like, and what controls you want. We write the price into the plan before work starts. How pricing works has the five things that move it.
